Information Literacy is defined as being able to: recognize when information is needed, locate a variety of sources, evaluate the sources critically and then synthesize and use the information effectively for a specific purpose. The book I have chosen as my professional resource is:

Guiding Students into Information Literacy: Strategies for Teachers and Teacher Librarians

book_cover.jpeg

Authors: Chris Carlson and Ellen Brosnahan

Scarecrow Press, Incorporated, 2009
ISBN# 9780810859746

In this book Carlson and Brosnahan start by helping teachers create good research assignments that will motivate students and provide them with the informational literacy skills that students require in life. They then take us through the process of how to teach students research skills, how to organize and synthesize their information and then present it in creative ways. Each chapter has been creatively titled using a question or statement that a student would say to their teacher in relation to the chapter's topic. They have also provided the reader with numerous web-sites and resources to supplement their information that are invaluable.

I have divided the book up into 6 sections that I would like to explore through our PLC over the next month.
